Covid-19 Vaccine Justice

Email the UK government

Right now we are facing a grotesque inequity in Covid-19 vaccine access. Of the 5 billion doses administered globally, only 1.4% have gone to low income countries. Low- and middle-income countries want to be able to produce their own vaccines but Big Pharma and high income countries, like the UK, are blocking them.

Whilst dose redistribution from the UK  is urgently needed, there are 2 key solutions on the table that would enable more manufacturers in low- and middle-income countries to produce pandemic tools to ensure they have access to a stable and sustained supply.

  • The 1st of these is Costa Rica and the WHO’s Covid-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP) – an initiative where pharma companies can share medical technologies, manufacturing know-how and intellectual property.
  • The 2nd is the proposal from the governments of South Africa and India to temporarily suspend intellectual property rights and trade secret rules on vaccines and other medical tools during the pandemic.

We need the UK Government to listen to what the countries on the frontline of the inequity in access to Covid-19 tools are calling for and enable them to make their own vaccines. We have the vaccine because we brought the lion’s share, we can’t now be preventing other countries from making their own.

Take action now and email the UK government to support these solutions to end vaccine apartheid.
